Despite all that droopy rain outside, Love, L'amour, El Amor, 사랑...it's in the air. Flower bunches at every Yaletown store, pink and red heart-shaped balloons hovering over heads, smiles on men's faces as they walk out the door with a box of custom-picked chocolates or 100 roses in their arms to impress, and fluttering hearts of new couples holding hands this weekend.
Call me unoriginal or cheesy, but I step outside with Frank Sinatra's L.O.V.E playing through my headphones, open up my umbrella, take a deep breath, and start walking. Nope, not actually to find love, but instead, something I love (Hot Chocolate). Anticlimactic?
Tomorrow's Valentines day. A celebration of the friendship kind of love, a long-grown admiration between two distant acquaintances, parental love, respect and thankfulness for family, and a deep, honeymoon-phase kind of love. Maybe you're like me, a single-person who fluctuates between bitterness, who-cares attitude and I-love-everyone outlook. Or maybe you're like high-schooler Robby, devising some intricate strategies in his mind to confess to his crush. Should he write a letter? Surprise her underneath those pretty lights of Gastown? Whoever you are, remember that you are loved, by someone in the present, the past and will be loved in the future.
Tomorrow is Valentines Day and everyone deserves a big smooch on the cheeks, a lung-squeezing hug, a glittering smile, and a reminder that you both radiate and attract the four letters of a mysterious and prevalent kind of emotion.
